Tell me about the new tests being developed


We are developing tests that are called point-of-care tests (or, POCTs). Point-of-care tests are defined as medical diagnostic tests that are performed where the patient is receiving care.

The POCTs that Precise is developing are part of the Atlas Genetics io™ system. This system is an easy-to-use, rapid testing platform for infections, and is specifically designed to be performed in the clinic, by clinical staff, whilst the patient waits.

The Atlas Genetics io™ system, consisting of a small instrument (the io™ Reader) and a test-specific disposable cartridge (the io™ Cartridge), delivers laboratory-accurate test results in 30 minutes.

This io™ system is capable of simultaneously identifying the cause of an infection and determining whether an organism is likely to be resistant to a specific antibiotic, providing clinicians with vital information on appropriate treatment.

How does the system work?

A patient specimen is added directly to the io™ Cartridge using the disposable pipette provided. The Cartridge is then inserted into the io™ Reader and the clinical staff member follows a few simple on-screen prompts to start the test which is then performed under complete instrument control, with no further user interaction necessary.

Similar to laboratory-based tests being used currently by the NHS, the io™ system determines the presence of an infection by detecting DNA specific to the bacteria suspected of causing the infection in the patient sample. Yet unlike conventional tests which are complex, expensive and can take several hours to give a result, the io™ can be run in the clinic by clinical staff.

By avoiding the delays and logistics associated with collection and transport of specimens to a centralised laboratory, the io™ system allows clinicians to test and treat within a single patient visit. This allows clinicians to prescribe appropriate treatment immediately. This way of testing is likely to lower the risk of complications and reduce spread of infection whilst improving the patient experience.
